When the family is unwrapping gifts, Ma’Dere receives a card from her ex-husband; it is then that we know that Ma’Dere & Senior have divorced which she is hiding from her kids. Lisa unknowingly picks up the same loan sharks (Mo & Dude) that Quentin is running away from, they opt to stay with him until he pays back the entire amount he owes them. Claude is immediately picked up by the police & as Quentin, Lisa, Mo & Dude head over to the police station, Lisa tries to convince Quentin to sell his percentage while informing him about Ma’Dere living with Joe. At the station, Quentin talks to Claude & finds out about him going AWOL (Absence without leave) plus his secret marriage to Sandi. The party returns with Sandi, while everyone is shocked about the marriage they warmly welcome Sandi home. Melanie while talking to Sandi finds out that she is pregnant but the marriage was not a shotgun marriage. Outside while Lisa & Kelli talk about the situation, they start arguing about Lisa’s marriage finally ending up in a fistfight which results in Lisa going away in the car. Ma’Dere sternly tells Quentin that she loved Senior but respects & loves Joe more, Lisa finally understands that she cannot put up with Malcolm anymore & destroys his car.
Gerald visits Kelli and initially after rejecting him, she invites him in. Quentin decides to run away again but before he leaves he keeps Joe’s stuff at his door and picks up his gift from Michael (A photo album of all the pics taken during the holidays). Finally Michael tells his mother about his passion for singing but she refuses to give him a chance fearful that he too would leave the family like the other men. Mo & Dude realize that Quentin is trying to run away so they follow him and start beating him in a toilet threatening him with a gun. But unknown to them Joe follows them and gives them 10,000 dollars instead of 25,000 warning them that if they don’t agree he would call the cops on them or shoot them. Quentin is grateful to Joe but goes away any way. Malcolm comes back to find Lisa waiting for him in revealing lingerie, she convinces him to take a shower and then quickly puts on her clothes rushing out to get a bottle of baby oil. Spreading the entire bottle of oil on the bathroom floor and holding a belt in her hand she asks him to come out. The moment he slips she confronts him about his affair while whipping him silly. Then she runs away and later is seen telling Kelli about the incident and admits that Kelli was right about him the entire time and that she is getting a divorce. While Kelli & Gerald will be going to New York together to give their relationship a chance.
At church after service Joe asks Michael to sing knowing that his mother would not object in public. Claude is allowed to see his family one last time before he is shipped off to a camp as punishment. Quentin surprises everyone by coming back. Back at home, everyone raise toasts but the most pleasing was from Quentin who finally accepts Joe as a family member. The end credits are hilarious as everyone does the soul train thing.
The movie should be watched for the performances for I was disappointed slightly by the ending. it has its serious moments which are not too serious thus not distracting you from the comedy. Overall a great movie when watching with friends or on a rainy day.

Thanks for the synopsis, this movie was not good at all, it was very cliche, but i missed some parts (was switching between Tiger Woods’ gossip on E! and this movie on HBO), so came googling to find out the parts i missed and thanks to your article i am all caught up! Thanks again!
