I find Adele a really passionate singer, one of the few women who really puts a lot of feeling into both the music and the performance. I decided to break down the simple yet powerful lyrics of her song “Rolling in the deep”.

Now I am adding only the unique stanzas so please keep in mind that the lyrics aren’t arranged to the exact timeline of the song

Break up songs are always dicey since it could have lyrics that you agree or disagree with but this one pretty much nails down perfectly the emotions one feels after things don’t end all that well. The difference lies in the fact that this song does not portray the woman as a blubbering bumblebee but rather a spirited Sekhmet and I like that. No one could have done this song better than Adele, her voice and passion makes you feel like you are that very Sekhmet charging through, bringing down the slug who played with you.

Realizing that she’s been played the fool, she keeps aside her tears and sorrows to find a fire burning brighter inside her. With renewed vigor and passion she discovers that he was not what she thought him to be; seeing his true self instead of the painted picture he had displayed for so long. Infuriated at the deceit, she warns him to not underestimate her any longer but instead reminds him of consequences he would have to face if he were to continue with his hurtful actions. Once again she tells us that the fire in her heart is burning brighter bringing her out of the darkness she’s been in for so long.

You see a glimpse of the pain of separation from the chorus stanzas, she refers to her experience, the mementos and the memories as scars… Scars that seem to make her heart ache since she truly loved him and felt they had everything a couple in love could ever have, well almost had it all. She resents that the man took all her love and trust and simply played with it taking advantage of the control he had over her. She spends the last few stanzas reminding him of the fact that she was there for him in every step but after what he has done to her, he will never gain what he lost. In his moments of despair and loneliness, he will have no one but himself because she has forever shut him out of her heart. Soon he will regret ever misusing her feelings and reap all the evil he has sown. Angry at having crushed her heart, she wishes he had never met her because he definitely does not deserve her.

In short, this song should be an inspiration to all those women who feel their lives would be empty without a man, those who break down their existence because a man has hurt them. Though she is angry and resentful, I listen to this song since it reminds me that he is not the only thing that makes me tick in this big world. I would have loved to go on and on about this song but I think simplicity in explanation is all that this song truly needs.

There’s a fire starting in my heart
Reaching a fever pitch and it’s bring me out the dark
Finally I can see you crystal clear
Go ahead and sell me out and I’ll lay your ship bare

See how I’ll leave with every piece of you
Don’t underestimate the things that I will do
There’s a fire starting in my heart
Reaching a fever pitch and it’s bringing me out the dark

The scars of your love remind me of us
They keep me thinking that we almost had it all
The scars of your love, they leave me breathless
I can’t help feeling

We could have had it all
Rolling in the deep
You had my heart inside your hand
And you played it to the beat

Baby, I have no story to be told
But I’ve heard one of you and I’m gonna make your head burn
Think of me in the depths of your despair
Making a down down there as mine sure won’t be shared.

Throw your soul through every open door
Count your blessings to find what you look for
Turn my sorrow into treasured gold
You pay me back in kind and reap just what you sow

-Now I’m gonna wish you never had met me-
You had my heart and soul
-Tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep-
And you played it to the beat
